Korean Gems
This section will share some of the items that I have encountered during my time in Korea that I find amusing.
This is the original gem that inspired this section. From a book report about the Wizard of Oz:
"East is very far from West."
That is profoundly deep and philosophical.
On the vocabulary portion of a written exam:
Question: Use the word "compete" in your own sentence.
Answer: I complete this sentence.
From a book report about a story entitled, "You Have Healthy Bones."
Take care of your bones and your bones will take care of you.
From another book report.
Question: Tell why you think this character is the most important.
Answer: Because its name is in the title.
Another teacher and I visited Kumho World, a large electronics store. Most of the vendors didn't speak much English, but one did and engaged us in the following conversation.
Salesman: Can I help you?
Us: No thanks. We're just looking.
Salesman: OK. Keep going.
As in, I didn't learn English to have you come and just look at my display. If you're not going to buy anything, go waste someone else's time.
From another book report about a story entitled, "A Gathering of Bald Men."
He is proud of no hair like Steve Teacher.
